live bait
This method probably accounts for more fish caught in Queensland than any other (excluding the nets!) The beauty of it is that the live-bait does most of the work for you. However, there is a big difference in catch rate between the angler who presents his/her bait effectively and the one who just casts over the side. But as they say ' better to have a line in than not at all'
At 'Gone Fishing' we'll teach you how to match hook size to bait, sinker size to current and depth and take the time to explain why. Let your guide position you effectively on the many snags that abound along our local rivers. Run your bait down with the current, trying to feel the live-bait swimming - this is very important because you're fishing so close to snags to entice a 'hit'. Your bait will usually become very active before a strike and any early warning, even if it's a split second, could mean the difference between landing the fish of a lifetime or losing it to the submerged timber, having it snap off and alert all the others of your arrival on the scene. This can sometimes prove costly, not on the part of lost tackle but of the fish departing elsewhere.
Another way of live-baiting is to 'trot down livies' under a float along the mangrove banks. This is a very accurate and aesthetic way of doing things. It is very pleasing to see your float 'bob' then disappear out of sight, striking and coming up solid against a hard fighting tropical fish. Again 'Gone Fishing' will teach you how to balance your terminal tackle to the conditions and show you a few 'sneaky tips' on the way.
Alternatively free-lining baits such as Herring, Prawns and mullet along the mangroves whilst underway with the electric motor is a truly exciting and effective way of enticing some of Australia's best fighting fish out of the mangroves, whether you can keep them out is another matter.
Learn how to locate bait schools and throw a cast net. If you're planning a trip up the Cape then a day spent with 'Gone Fishing' will stand you in good stead for what is on offer up there.
